I-81 Widening Project

Update 6/21/16: Noise wall consideration [PDF]

I-81 Six Lane Widening Project

The Interstate 81 Project consists of widening I-81 from a four lane highway to a six lane highway. The project begins at M.P. 23.95 (Marlow Interchange-US 11) in West Virginia and ends at the WV/Maryland state line for a total project length of 2.8 miles. The WVDOH has evaluated the noise levels in the immediate project area and has determined a potential impact. The WVDOH is considering the use of a noise wall for noise mitigation along northbound I-81 in your neighborhood. The photos below show examples of noise walls located in other states. The length of the proposed wall is 2117 feet in length and varies in height from 6 feet to 17 feet at an estimated cost of $1,143,000.00. The maximum range for noise attenuation is 5 feet above ground level; therefore, attenuation benefits may decrease above this height and the second story of a residence may see little to no benefit. The attached drawing identifies the area in which the wall is being considered.

YOUR RESPONSE IS IMPORTANT TO US!

Favorable responses from at least 50% of the benefitted residences (occupants and owners) near I-81 must be received in order for noise abatement to be considered further. A non-response will be considered as a lack of interest in noise abatement. This flyer is being provided to residents who may be benefitted by the project. All responses must contain your name and physical address.
