Bramwell Bridges

The West Virginia Division of Highways is proposing to replace the Yon-Peraldo Memorial Bridge (Bramwell Twin Pony Truss) and the Duhring Street Pony Truss Bridge, two bridges in the Town of Bramwell, West Virginia (Project Handout - 22 MB PDF). The projects consist of replacing both bridges in their existing locations. The purpose of the projects is to replace/renovate the existing bridges to meet current design standards including suitable weight limits to efficiently serve the residential, commercial and business community. Several alternatives are being developed for both projects.

Bramwell Map

Yon-Peraldo Memorial Bridge

The Yon-Peraldo Memorial Bridge (Bramwell Twin Pony Truss) is located on County Route 20/5 and consists of replacing the existing bridge that crosses over Bluestone River on Bloch Street. The existing bridge was built in 1930 by the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company. The bridge consists of two identical, simple riveted pony truss spans (SSPT) and is supported at each end by full-height stone masonry abutments and intermediately by a stone masonry solid pier. The overall length of the structure is 136’7” and the roadway width is 15’2”. The bridge is located within the Town of Bramwell at the northern end of the Bramwell Historic District.

Several alternatives have been studied for the Yon-Peraldo Memorial Bridge over the years.

  • Alternative #1-Bridge replaced in existing location single lane 15’ wide bridge 5’ shoulder on the downstream side.
  • Alternative #2-Bridge replaced in existing location 2-11”lanes 2-2’ shoulders and a 5’ sidewalk on the downstream side.
  • Alternative #3-Bridge replaced in existing location 2-11’lanes 2-2’ shoulders 5’ sidewalk on upstream side.
  • Alternative #3A-Bridge replaced in existing location 2-11’lanes 2-2’ shoulders 5’ sidewalk on downstream side.
  • Alternative #4-Rehabilitate existing bridge
  • Alternative #5-Obtaining the railroad bridge and closing the existing bridge permanently.
  • Alternative #6-Using the existing substructure (piers and abutments) and providing a new superstructure.
  • Alternative #7-Bridge to be located upstream of the existing structure.
  • Alternative #8A (Preferred)-Bridge replaced in the existing location with an approximately 23’8’ wide, two span prefabricated truss bridge.
  • Alternative #8B-Similar to Alternative #8A this bridge consists of a one span prefabricated truss.
  • Alternative #8C-Similar to Alternative #8A this bridge consists of a conventional slab and rolled beam superstructure.
  • No-Build Alternative-This alternative will result in the permanent closure of the existing bridge.

At the time of this meeting the preferred alternative is Alternative #8A, will replace the existing structure with a new truss bridge (similar to the existing structure) with a traveled way of maximum width while not requiring any of the existing historic structures to be taken. A temporary detour route through town is required (See detour map).

Duhring Street Pony Truss Bridge

The Duhring Street Pony Truss Bridge is located on County Route 20/20 and consists of replacing the existing bridge that crosses over Bluestone River. The existing bridge was built in 1915 by the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company of Roanoke, Virginia.  The bridge consists of two simple riveted and bolted steel pony truss spans (SSPT) and is supported at each end by full-height stone masonry abutments and intermediately by a reinforced concrete pier.  The overall length of the structure is 115’3” and the roadway width is 11’5” curb to curb.  The bridge is located within the Town of Bramwell and is located in the Bramwell Historic District.

Several alternatives have been studied for the Duhring Street Pony Truss Bridge over the years.

  • Alternative #1-A new conventional bridge at the location of the existing bridge.
  • Alternative #2-Renovates the existing bridge retaining current clear width of 11’5”.
  • Alternative #2A-Renovates the existing bridge increasing clear width to 14’0”.
  • Alternative #3-Upgrades county route 20/80 and builds a new connector, and eliminating the need for a bridge.
  • Alternative #4 (Preferred)-A new pony truss at the location of the existing bridge.
  • No-Build Alternative-This alternative would result in the permanent closure of the existing bridge.

At the time of this meeting the preferred alternative is Alternative #4, which will replace the existing structure with a new truss bridge (similar to the existing structure) with a traveled way of maximum width while not requiring any of the existing historic structures to be taken. A temporary detour route through town is required (See detour map).

The purpose of this informational workshop public meeting is to afford participants an opportunity to ask questions and state their views and opinions on the two bridge projects in the town of Bramwell.  Highway personnel will be available to answer any questions. There will be no formal presentation. A construction contract for both bridges is scheduled to start in the Fall of 2012.

The Commenting period ended on Thursday, September 1, 2011.
