As TSA deadline approaches, WV DMV reaches out: "It's easy to get your Real ID"

Charleston, W.V. -- West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reaching out to West Virginians to offer support in getting a Real ID as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) deadline for additional fee draws near.

On February 1, 2026, all airport passengers who do not have a REAL ID or another acceptable ID (such as a passport) will be required by TSA to complete an extra identity check, accompanied by a $45 fee.

“It’s easy to get your Real ID,” said Everett Frazier, commissioner of the West Virginia DMV. “Come into any DMV office.  You’ll be greeted and welcomed, our staff are here to answer your questions and make every process as easy as possible.”

West Virginia DMV also offers a Real ID Headstart on its website, dmv.wv.gov, where guests can upload their documents before visiting a DMV office.  This saves time and helps ensure that all necessary documents are ready to go beforehand.

“The first time you get the REAL ID, you bring in your birth certificate and your name change documents, along with two proofs of your physical West Virginia address,” said Mike May, who manages the REAL ID program for the West Virginia DMV.  “After that, it’s the same as a regular renewal every time.”

Over 64 percent of West Virginians already have their Real ID, marked by a small star in the upper corner of their drivers license.  This number continues to grow.  The Real ID is accepted as identification not only to fly, but to visit federal offices such as the Social Security Administration.  REAL ID is compatible with the new Mobile ID’s, so users who have REAL ID will also see the star when they pull up their Drivers License on their phone.

“Life happens,” said Frazier. “Even for someone who has never flown, you don’t know when you might have to. Don’t let your procrastination become your frustration.  We’re here to help.”

To find out more about REAL ID’s, visit dmv.wv.gov or stop by your local DMV office.
