Perfect time for customers to obtain a “REAL ID”
CHARLESTON, W.Va.- Due to a temporary supply shortage of secure laminate used to produce “Not for Federal Use” driver’s licenses and ID cards over the counter at Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Regional Offices, DMV offices across West Virginia will employ a single central issuance process for both Real ID compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards and “Not for Federal Use” cards. For customers applying for or renewing a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or ID card, there is no change in process. For customers applying for or renewing a “Not for Federal Use” driver’s license or ID card, the licenses and cards will be delivered to the customers’ homes from a secured central facility in 10 to 14 business days. DMV will produce a temporary driver’s license or ID card for use until the new permanent document arrives.
According to DMV Commissioner Adam Holley, this is a perfect time for customers to upgrade to a “REAL ID” or “Gold Star” driver’s license or ID card, if they don’t have one yet. “Beginning in October 2020, the federal government will start enforcing an additional component of the REAL ID Act for boarding aircraft or getting into federal buildings. A REAL ID compliant driver’s license or ID card is an acceptable document to meet this new requirement ,” he said.
In general, to obtain an initial REAL ID “Gold Star” compliant driver’s license or ID card in West Virginia, a customer must present:
- One proof of identity
- One proof of Social Security Number
- Two Proofs of WV Residency
- Proof of legal presence
