Online Insurance Verification
The WV Division of Motor Vehicles has developed an online insurance verification program (WVOLV) to enable instant verification of auto insurance policies by matching the policy number and vehicle identification number (VIN) or serial number back to the insurance company to verify the policy information following the IICMVA model.
Program Goals
The goals of this program are to take the burden off of insured motorists by reducing the number of uninsured motorists on the roadways and to provide insurance information needed at the time of a traffic stop, crash investigation, registration transaction, or fraud investigation.
Web Services Guide
All insurers, except those specifically granted an exemption, are required to implement web services capable of verifying the existence of mandatory insurance for vehicles in West Virginia which must be covered by private passenger auto policies. An insurer that provides coverage to fewer than 500 policies in West Virginia may request an exemption waiver from establishing a web service. For more information on implementation of IICMVA Web Services, please visit https://iicmva.com/publications/
Book of Business Guide
The WV Division of Motor Vehicles supports full book of business files from carriers. This information is used to assist in VIN mismatch resolution. For more information on implementation of Book of Business, please view IICMVA Data Transfer Implementation Guide - V1.2
National Association of Insurance Commissioners Number
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners Number (NAIC number) is on all ID card/Certificate of Insurance and registrant transaction at the DMV.
