The West Virginia Division of Highways participates in the A.L.I.C.E. Training which is an active shooter preparation program. The agency currently has twenty certified instructors available to present the workplace safety program throughout the districts and divisions of the state. Each session covers various mock scenarios with active participation from the participants in order to be more aware and prepared for possible workplace violence.
A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym that stands for:
Alert: Use plain and specific language to Alert to others to the danger.
Lockdown: Barricade the room. Prepare to Evacuate or Counter if needed.
Inform: Communicate the violent intruders location and direction in real time.
Counter: Create Noise, Movement, Distance and Distraction with the intent of reducing the shooters ability to shoot accurately. Counter is NOT fighting.
Evacuate: When safe to do so, remove yourself from the danger zone.
