WVDOH closing short span bridge on Rutledge Road in Charleston

8/8/2025

The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) is closing a short span bridge at milepost .38 on Rutledge Road in Charleston until WVDOH bridge crews can obtain materials to replace the bridge.

The bridge had already been restricted to one lane due to problems with two steel support beams. A routine bridge inspection revealed additional problems, prompting the WVDOH to close the structure out of an abundance of caution.

WVDOH engineers will expedite a project to replace the bridge, which is 18 feet long.

“This is a good example of why I have shifted our focus to attention on our bridges and other infrastructure,” said Transportation Secretary Stephen Todd Rumbaugh. “This particular structure was on the list for replacement, and we were hoping it would hold out a little longer.”

The WVDOH has set up two detours until the bridge can be replaced, both accessible to school buses and emergency vehicles:

  • From Greenbrier Street (WV 114), pass Rutledge Road and continue 2.9 miles to Mill Creek Road. Turn right on Mill Creek Road and continue 2 miles to Martins Hollow Road. Turn right onto Martin Hollow Road and continue 1.1 miles to the intersection with Rutledge Road. Turn right and follow Rutledge Road 2.9 miles to the intersection of Bakers Fork and Rutledge Road. Detour is about 15 minutes.
  • From downtown Charleston, take Greenbrier Street (WV 114) to Oakridge Drive. Turn right on Oakridge Drive for .1 mile. Turn left onto Bakers Fork Road and follow 3.4 miles to the intersection of Bakers Fork and Rutledge Road.
