Background
I-64 is a multi-lane fully controlled access highway extending from the Kentucky State line at Huntington to the Virginia State line at White Sulphur Springs
Construction of I-64 in WV completed in 1988
I-64 designated as part of National Highway System by NHS Act
Construction of new multi-lane bridge adjacent to existing bridge spanning Kanawha River between Dunbar and South Charleston, Kanawha County, identified as a needed improvement within the Charleston MPO Long-Range Transportation Plan
Current four-lane bridge carries an average of 78,000 vehicles per day, 15 percent of which are trucks
When completed, I-64 Bridge will carry six through lanes and two auxiliary lanes between WV 25 at Dunbar and US 60 at South Charleston
Funding
Estimated total project cost (including design/engineering, right-of-way/utilities) of $196.5 million
Project Status
Construction completed for widening of I-64 (including bridges) between Dunbar and South Charleston at cost of $2.3 million
Construction of new multi-lane bridge (east abutment, piers, superstructure) underway by Brayman Construction of Saxonburg, PA. Construction is anticipated to be completed late 2010 at cost of $93.6 million
Construction by balanced cantilever using form traveloers with 175 cast-in-place segments
Project includes 8 spans at a total length of 2,950 feet
When complete, the bridge's 760-foot main span will be the longest concrete box girder span in the US
Reconstruction of deck and other repairs along existing bridge not yet scheduled; construction cost anticipated to be $11.0 million
