Statewide Highway Statistics

The Division of Highways maintains a world-class mountain transportation system traversing valleys, rivers, and rugged terrain. Below are the infrastructure totals as of December 31, 2024:

  • Total Public Roads: 39,138 miles
    • State-Owned: 34,945 miles
    • Municipally Owned: 3,279 miles
    • Federally Owned: 914 miles
  • Interstate Highways: 555 miles (State-owned)
  • West Virginia Turnpike: 86 miles
  • National Highway System (NHS): 2,094 miles
    • Includes 20 miles of connectors to airports, trains, and bus terminals.
  • Bridges: 7,276 total structures (35% exceed 100 feet in length).
  • Scenic Byways and Backways: 1 All-American Road, 5 National Byways, 13 State Byways, and 12 Backways.
