The Oakwood Road eastbound entrance ramp and westbound exit ramp will be closed nightly on the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., beginning Monday, October 12, 2026, to install painting platforms. Work is expected to last at least until the end of the week.
In June, Triton Construction Inc. was awarded a contract for $74,500,000 to replace the deck on the Eugene Carter Bridge, which carries Interstate 64 across the Kanawha River in Charleston. It is the most heavily traveled bridge in West Virginia, carrying about 100,000 vehicles a day.
Triton is currently working on two crossovers to prepare for the start of deck replacement in January 2027. Early next year, Triton plans to move all traffic to the eastbound lanes of the bridge to replace the deck on the westbound side. Once completed, traffic will be moved to the westbound lanes to replace the eastbound half of the span.
All construction activity is being carefully planned and coordinated to minimize traffic impacts to the public. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted work zone guidance, and allow additional travel time when passing through active construction areas.
All work is expected to be complete by the spring of 2028.
