The West Virginia Division of Multimodal Transportation Facilities has announced the conclusion of another successful year of scenic excursion and freight operations for the Cass Scenic Railroad, Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad (West Virginia Central), and the Potomac Eagle.
While the summer months of July and August experienced a slight dip in ridership compared to the previous year, a powerful resurgence during the fall foliage season brought overall annual passenger totals strong and steady, according to Division Commissioner Cindy Butler.

Inaugural "Rail Explorers" Season Boosts Regional Tourism
A major highlight of the year was the highly successful debut of Rail Explorers: The Buffalo Creek Cruise. Launched in June 2024 through a collaboration between Rail Explorers CEO Mary Joy Lu, the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT), and state tourism officials, this outdoor adventure breathed new life into a historic rail line dating back to 1904.
- Economic Impact: The attraction brought 15,932 visitors into the small town of Clay, drawing tourists from all 50 states and 25 different countries to experience the scenic Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad.
- The Technology: The custom, pedal-powered railbikes feature hydraulic disc brakes and a proprietary electric motor assist known as the REX Propulsion System. They are available in Tandem (up to two riders) or Quad (up to four riders) configurations.
