A West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) road worker is currently recovering in the intensive care unit after being struck by a truck while performing emergency road repairs on WV 62 in Mason County on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
“It’s upsetting that anyone gets hurt in the highway system at all, let alone one of our transportation workers,” said Transportation Secretary Stephen Todd Rumbaugh, P.E. “Safety is going to be a priority with this administration.”
Incident Details
The incident occurred just before 8:00 p.m. as the injured worker and a second crew member were patching a pothole on the highway.
- Safety Measures in Place: Both workers were wearing high-visibility reflective clothing, and the warning lights on their WVDOH truck were actively flashing to alert drivers.
- The Collision: An oncoming truck approached the work zone and failed to slow down. Both workers attempted to run out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, but one was struck.
Injuries and Treatment
The worker sustained severe trauma in the collision, including a fractured femur, a broken arm, and a separated shoulder. He was initially transported to Pleasant Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant before being transferred to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington for specialized care.
He has since undergone surgery to repair his femur and will require additional surgical procedures to repair his broken arm and shoulder. He is currently recovering in the ICU at St. Mary's.
