Permit Types
Permit Guidelines: Oversize and Overweight (OS/OW)
The West Virginia Division of Highways provides several permit options for vehicles that exceed legal size and weight limits. These permits are categorized into Single Trip and Blanket (Annual) authorizations, each governed by specific dimensional constraints and fee structures.
Single Trip Permits
Single trip permits are issued for a one-time movement of a specific vehicle along a designated route. All single trip permits are subject to a size and weight analysis prior to issuance.
- General Single Trip: Used for standard oversize and/or overweight loads.
- Cost: $20.00 base fee plus $0.04 per ton-mile for overweight loads.
- Mobile Home Single Trip: Specifically for the transport of mobile homes.
- Cost: $20.00 per permit.
Mobile Home Single Trip Dimensional Limits
- Maximum Width: 16 feet
- Maximum Height: 15 feet 6 inches
- Maximum Combination Length: 110 feet
- Maximum Mobile Home Length: 80 feet
Bridge Crossing & Monitoring Fees
If a single trip permit requires low-impact monitoring for bridge crossings, additional fees apply based on the number of structures crossed:
- First Bridge: $150.00
- Second Bridge: $100.00
- Each Additional Bridge: $50.00
- Maximum Monitoring Fee: $750.00
Blanket (Annual) Permits
- Regular - Annual permit issued for oversize and/or overweight. Specific to a particular power unit.
- Oversize - For oversize only.
- Overweight and Oversize - For overweight (and oversize).
- Seagoing - Annual permit for overweight seagoing containerized cargo. Specific to a particular power unit.
- Mobile Home - Annual permits for mobile homes 14 feet wide or less. Specific to a particular power unit.
Blanket permits are valid for unlimited trips for a period of one year from the start date. These permits are specific to a particular power unit. With the exception of Seagoing permits, overweight loads must be nondivisible. The start date may be the application date or any date up to 30 days in the future.
General Constraint: Overhang dimensions may not exceed 15 feet in the front and 30 feet in the rear for any permit type.
Oversize Blanket Permits
Cost: $200.00 each. These permits apply legal weight limits and are restricted by route type:

Specialized Blanket Permits
Seagoing Containerized Cargo
This permit is for overweight seagoing containerized cargo and allows travel on most major highways. Some restrictions apply.
- Weight Limits: 90,000 lbs Gross; 28,000 lbs Single Axle; 45,000 lbs Tandem; 50,000 lbs Tridem.
- Cost: $150.00 for the first 15 permits; $15.00 for each additional permit.
Mobile Home Blanket
For mobile homes 14 feet wide or less.
- Cost: $200.00 each.
- Limits: 110' Combination Length; 80' Mobile Home Length; 14' Width; 15' 6" Height.
