Traffic Monitoring
The Traffic Monitoring Program is a comprehensive two-component initiative responsible for analyzing and managing traffic count data at a statewide level. This data provides the analytical foundation for West Virginia’s transportation planning, allowing for sophisticated modeling and simulation that guides major infrastructure recommendations, including lane additions, road widening, and new interchanges.

The program balances continuous monitoring with broad geographic sampling to create a complete picture of how vehicles move across the state’s roadway network.

WVDOH provides public and professional access to Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) data and specialized traffic summaries through interactive tools and request forms.

- WVDOH Traffic Data Request Form: Formal requests for specific traffic datasets must be submitted through this portal for approval and completion.
Reporting and Performance Measures
In addition to local planning, the Traffic Monitoring Program fulfills critical federal requirements:
- FHWA Submissions: Monthly submission of Traffic Monitoring Analysis System (TMAS) data.
- HPMS Reporting: Annual calculation of traffic summaries and travel time reliability measures for the Highway Performance Monitoring System.
- Management Guidance: Providing the essential data that informs executive decisions regarding any significant changes to the roadway network.
