The West Virginia Department of Transportation has an excellent benefits package for employees to take advantage of, including:
Retirement Plan
- The Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) is an exceptional benefit pension plan that provides qualifying employees with a lifetime benefit in the years after their employment ends.
- Employees contribute 6% of their gross monthly salary to the retirement plan (tax deferred).
- WVDOT contributes 9% of the employee’s gross monthly salary for a total combined contribution equal to 15%.
- The West Virginia Retirement Plus 457 plan is an optional supplemental retirement plan designed to supplement PERS. This program is similar to a 401(k) retirement plan.
Paid Annual Leave (Vacation)
- WVDOT employees receive a generous amount of annual leave based upon years of service.
- New hires earn 4 hours and 37 minutes of annual leave at the end of every biweekly pay period.
- New hires can earn up to 14 days of annual leave for the first year.

Paid Sick Leave
- All employees earn 5 hours and 33 minutes of sick leave at the end of every biweekly pay period.
- Employees can earn up to 17 days of sick leave each year.
- Sick leave may be used for medical appointments, family illnesses/appointments, or for a death in the family.
Paid Holidays
- The WVDOT offers 12 paid holidays each year. In addition, employees generally do not work on statewide primary and general election days.
Annual Increment Pay
- WVDOT employees who work 3 or more years are eligible to receive an annual increment amount equal to $60 for each full year of service.
Insurance
- Medical Insurance
- The WVDOT offers a comprehensive health insurance plan through the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA).
- Life Insurance
- The WVDOT offers a $10,000 decreasing term life insurance policy at no cost to the employee.
- Additional life insurance is also available up to a maximum benefit of $500,000 at a nominal fee.
- Dependent life insurance for spouses and children is also available for purchase.
- Mountaineer Flexible Benefits
- The Mountaineer Flexible Benefits Program offers employees tax-free deductions for many insurance plans such as dental, vision, disability, etc.
Employee Education Reimbursement Program
- The WVDOT offers a tuition reimbursement program to employees for job-related training.
