9/15/2025

A contractor was killed early Saturday morning in a work zone accident on Interstate 64 East near Huntington.

The contractor, working for Triton Construction Inc., was working near mile marker 17 on I-64 at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025, when the accident occurred.

"Triton is deeply saddened to confirm that a member of our construction team was fatally injured while performing work on I-64 as part of an active highway construction project," said Jason Hunter, vice president of construction for Triton Construction.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family, friends, and co-workers during this incredibly difficult time," Hunter said. "We have reached out to the family and are offering our full support, including counseling and other resources, to help them and our team members cope with this tragedy.

"Safety is our top priority, and we are cooperating fully with authorities and the WVDOH as they investigate the circumstances of this incident. Out of respect for the ongoing investigation, and the family’s privacy, we will not be providing additional details at this time."

I-64 remained closed about three hours as authorities investigated the accident.
