WVDOH reports strong turnout, productive feedback at Greenbag Road Widening Public Involvement Meeting

11/24/2025

The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) conducted a Public Involvement Meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 for the Greenbag Road Widening Project in Monongalia County. The event saw strong attendance and productive community engagement.

The meeting, held at Mountainview Elementary School, followed a drop-in format that allowed residents to review project maps, speak with project team members, and provide feedback on the proposed improvements. Representatives from the WVDOH were available throughout the event to answer questions and explain the project’s purpose and need.

The proposed project aims to widen Greenbag Road, address congestion and safety issues caused by substandard lane widths and inadequate shoulders, and improve multimodal accommodations throughout the corridor. WVDOH engineers propose a roundabout to address the situation, and presented three alternative designs for public comment.

WVDOH officials said they were encouraged by the turnout and the level of interest shown by local residents, business owners, and community stakeholders.

While the overall response to the project was positive, the WVDOH acknowledged concerns raised by several attendees regarding potential property impacts, including the future acquisition of farmland within the project limits. Several families who operate or rely on the agricultural property attended the meeting to express concerns about how the project may affect their land, income, and heritage.

As the project progresses, the WVDOH will continue coordinating with affected property owners and reviewing alternatives where feasible. Additional communications, meetings, and notices will be provided before any acquisition actions occur.

Public comments will continue to be accepted through Thursday, December 19, 2025, and can be submitted online at go.wv.gov/dotcomment or by emailing Douglas.W.Kirk@wv.gov.
