The new bridge over the Kanawha Turnpike is now open to northbound traffic from Jefferson Road (WV 601).
In April 2019, Kokosing Construction Company was awarded a contract for $46.8 million to widen Jefferson Road to five lanes between Corridor G and US 60 in South Charleston, replacing a congested dogleg intersection and rail crossing at the intersection of Kanawha Turnpike and Jefferson Road with a new bridge and roundabout. Heavy growth along Corridor G has led to growing congestion on Jefferson Road, especially during the holiday season and on weekends.
The new bridge opened to northbound traffic on Wednesday, May 21, 2022, to allow contractors to work on the approaches to the planned roundabout. That work is expected to last until July, when southbound traffic on Jefferson Road will also be shifted onto the new span.
Once Jefferson Road traffic is completely shifted onto the new bridge, contractors will work to tie the roundabout in to Kanawha Turnpike. The project is expected to be completed this fall.
