WVDOH pours concrete deck on Rutledge Road bridge in Charleston

West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) District 1 bridge crews took the next step in reopening a short span bridge on Rutledge Road in Charleston on Monday, October 27, 2025, when they poured the concrete deck on the new bridge.

The WVDOH closed the bridge on Rutledge Road on Friday, August 8, 2025, after a routine bridge inspection revealed deterioration in the steel beams supporting the structure. One lane of the roughly 18-foot bridge had been closed previously.

WVDOH bridge engineers were able to expedite an emergency replacement project for the span, and expedited an agreement with the power company to move a utility line to allow access to the site. In August and September, bridge crews took down the old span, drilled for pilings, and built new abutments for a new bridge.

Once concrete for the new deck cures, WVDOH bridge crews will pave the approaches and install guardrails. The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic by mid-November.
