WVDOH schedules preventative patching on I-64 Fort Hill Bridge in Charleston on Saturday, July 19, 2025

7/18/2025

West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) bridge crews plan to do preventative patching on the westbound slow lane of Interstate 64 across the Fort Hill Bridge in Charleston from 6 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2025, to 6 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 2025.

Heavy rains in recent weeks have led to several potholes developing on the bridge. The WVDOH has been patching those potholes as they occur, but now plan more long-term, preventative patching.

WVDOH bridge crews will survey the bridge for signs of concrete that may cause potholes in the future, mill those areas out, and patch them with concrete. Crews will also replace recent temporary asphalt patches with concrete.

The patching is part of a three-phase plan to address deteriorating concrete on the bridge.

WVDOH engineers hope to go to bid this fall with a project to do more extensive patching, lay down a protective membrane, and lay down a layer of asphalt across the entire bridge. That repair should last until a contract can go out to replace the entire bridge deck.

Work is being done at night to minimize the impact on the traveling public.
