A new website has been launched to provide the public with information about a major infrastructure initiative underway in the Charleston Metropolitan area. The site serves as the central hub for the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s (WVDOT) Charleston Metro Projects program, an effort focused on rehabilitating and replacing aging bridges across the region. The new website, available at https://projects.charlestonmetroprojects.com, offers access to up-to-date details about more than 50 planned and active projects designed to extend the life of critical infrastructure and improve safety and reliability throughout the metro area. “The Charleston Metro bridge program demonstrates the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s commitment to preserving the existing highway infrastructure at a satisfactory level,” said state Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh, P.E. “This program is part of a fiscally responsible, data-driven approach for project selection that will improve highways and bridges throughout the state of West Virginia.” “This is an exciting time for the Charleston-Metro area,” said Jason Pizatella, CEO of the Contractors Association of West Virginia. “The City of Charleston and the Division of Highways, on behalf of the state, have underway, or are about to get underway, dozens of road and bridge projects that will improve the quality of life for all who live here and visit here. With this unprecedented level of activity, it will require the patience of everyone who utilizes the highway system. “We applaud the Morrisey administration and Secretary Rumbaugh for launching this information portal to provide timely information on when traffic delays may occur,” Pizatella said. “On behalf of the entire industry, let’s all work together to continue building a better Kanawha Valley and a better West Virginia.” With so many projects planned in a fairly small area, it was vital for WVDOT engineers and contractors to minimize traffic impacts on the public. Project start and completion times have been carefully staggered so there aren’t multiple projects under construction simultaneously. ”Safety is our top priority and communication is an essential tool in ensuring the safety of the traveling public and the men and women who maintain and build our highways,” Rumbaugh said. “As this program progresses, we will continue our efforts to provide timely information to remind everyone to slow down and be cautious when they encounter work zones.” Visitors to the website can explore:- An overview of the Charleston Metro Projects program and its goals
- An interactive project map with location-specific details
- Information on the type of repairs or replacements planned at each site
- Expected construction schedules and anticipated timelines
- Traffic management plans, including detours, where necessary
- Resources for real-time travel information during construction
The WVDOT initiated the Charleston Metro Projects program to address the challenges posed by aging infrastructure and to make strategic investments in the region’s transportation network. The coordinated effort allows multiple bridge projects to advance under a unified program, helping to streamline delivery while minimizing long-term disruption. While construction activity may affect daily travel at times, transportation officials emphasize that the work is essential to maintaining safe and dependable roadways for the traveling public. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted work zone guidance, and allow additional travel time when passing through active construction areas. Real-time traffic conditions and travel updates are available through the state’s WV 511 site at wv511.org or via the WV511 Drive Safe mobile app. The Charleston Metro Projects website will be updated regularly as work progresses, providing a transparent and accessible source of information throughout the life of the program.
