Geographic Information System (GIS) is an informational system capable of integrating, storing, analyzing, and managing data, which are spatially referenced to the Earth. The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) utilizes GIS for planning, analysis, and mapping purposes within the department. In addition, GIS is being established as an enterprise system capable of integrating and spatially enabling various databases throughout the WVDOT. The key component that makes this happen is the WVDOT Linear Referencing System; or, simply put, the milepost markers positioned along the roadside. This has been the traditional method of locating assets or incidents in West Virginia through the years. By integrating this information into our GIS, we are able to establish an enterprise system to better serve you.
