Text Message Scam

Text Message, (SMISHING) Scam

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a public service announcement that relates to a text messaging scam, which has targeted toll road users in several states.

The text message fraudulently claims that it represents a tolling agency directing them to pay an outstanding toll balance.

The West Virginia Parkways Authority does not currently communicate with account holders via text to make payments or request account information. If you believe that you have received a fraudulent text, we highly encourage you to file a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, (IC3).

The following is suggested:
1. File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov, be sure to include:

2. The website listed within the text.
2. Check your account using the toll service's legitimate website.
3. Contact the toll service's customer service phone number.
4. Delete any smishing texts received.
5. If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
